What is Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Family Alliance?

Candlelighters is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity organized to provide emotional, educational and practical assistance to children with cancer and their families treated at the Texas Medical Center and/or who reside in the 13 counties of the greater Houston area. Candlelighters focuses on practical, emotional and educational needs of children with cancer and their families.

Who is eligible for benefits?

Children with cancer and their families, long-term survivors of childhood cancer, adult survivors of childhood cancer and their families, and bereaved families are all eligible. All of our programs and services are provided at no cost to our families.

Programs and Services provided by Candlelighters:

• One-on-one contact and support by the Candlelighters Parent Consultants at the treatment center, at home, at school, by phone, at meetings and events
• Parking validations and meal passes at the treatment centers
• Grocery Gift certificates
• Quarterly newsletter
• Welcome gifts and toys, toiletry items and clothing
• Funeral-related expenses paid to a funeral home in one of the 13 counties served by Candlelighters
• Adopt-A-Family for the Holidays
• Camp Cliff Family Camp
• Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Awareness Party
• Telephone support and bereaved parent support
• Emergency aid and research grants as funding permits

A Note from Candlelighters - Summer Holiday

Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Family Alliance and Candlelighters volunteers will host a Summer Surprises July event at Texas Children’s and MD Anderson’s hospitals on July 28th and July 29th. Events will include handing out gifts and sweets to all of the childhood cancer patients and their siblings. They will be bringing some “holiday” cheer in the middle of summer to children undergoing treatment at the cancer centers.

Each year during the Christmas holiday’s we do a holiday drive/Adopt a Family Program. This year, we had an excess of gifts that were generously donated to our children, which enabled us to provide this wonderful Summer Surprises Program. Special thanks to Houston Relocation Professionals for their generosity and for making this event possible for our children.
