March 18, 2004      General Meeting

Houston Relocation Professionals
and the
Greater Houston Partnership

The Houston Relocation Professions hosted an event Thursday March 18.  The focus was on the 2003 relocations, expectations for 2004 and a presentation from representatives of HP, Inc. and ConocoPhillips regarding their relocations.

Following is the summary and some observations of the event:
The economic indicators for Houston seem to be doing very well.  The Houston economy is affected by three things:
    1. the national ecomony - GDP is expanding at 4%
    2. energy prices - 2003 recorded high price levels of West Texas Intermediate Crude, current prices are also high
    3. the value of the dollar - the current situation is very good for exports

Houston is also projecting job growth of 1.5% for this year (31,000 new jobs).

Here are a few notes from the speaker from ConocoPhillips:
Houston is important because we are an energy hub and a global transportation hub, in close proximity to their partners, customers and suppliers.
The current labor force and availability of affordable housing are also very important.
They moved over 1100 employees into Houston and 300 employees out of Houston from August 02 to December 03.
ConocoPhillips offered employees and their families a chance to visit Houston.  They also set up Houston resource rooms (our books were included), an intranet website with Houston links (www.houstonnewcomerguides.com was linked) and sent mailouts about Houston.
The weather (interesting) and big-city amenities (theatres, restaurants, shopping, lifestyle, golf, etc.) are also very important.
Most of their employees ultimately decided that proximity to work was the most important factor in buying a home.

Here are a few notes from the speaker from HP, Inc.:
They brought 200 employees from Roseville (near Sacramento) CA
They had organized preview trips on different weekends to bring employees to Houston (this was more successful than they anticipated).
Coming from California, they needed to emphasize Houston as a big city, with all (usually more) of the amenities from home, with a much better cost of living.
Religous and ethnic diversity and higher education were also important.

Both relocations were considered successful by the companies involved.  I believe both reported having more employees come to Houston than originally anticipated.

Overall, it was a very encouraging event.  2004 has the potential to be a great year for Houston.

Amazon.com Editorial Review -- Book Description
Houston Dining on the Cheap is the first and only guide to target the best inexpensive restaurants in Houston. It will help you discover the top places from the thousands of increasingly diverse dining options available in America's fourth largest, and most sprawling, city. Among the restaurants and specialties described are: regional Mexican food in seemingly run-down taquerias; barbecue joints; all-American diners; Colombian rotisserie chicken fast food; sushi; Tex-Mex; Vietnamese sandwiches; Italian; phô, the Vietnamese beef noodle soup; the best hamburgers; Chinese; dim sum in the Chinatowns; Indian; chicken fried steak; Middle Eastern; soul food; Guatemalan; Persian; Greek; pizza; Thai; Cajun; South American; and more.
This guide is informative, interesting, opinionated and easy to use: there are descriptive entries for each of the highlighted restaurants listing the most important information for each; restaurants are listed alphabetically; restaurants are indexed by cuisine and by area of town.
